Brazil coronavirus variant found in Nevada
Three cases of a coronavirus variant first identified in Brazil and thought to be more easily transmissible are found in Nevada, a minimum of one among them in Clark County.
The first case within the state of the variant referred to as P.1 was detected in Clark County late last month, said Mark Pandori, director of the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory at the varsity of drugs at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Two more cases were found in the week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in samples of positive COVID-19 tests provided by private labs. Information on these cases, like the counties where they originated, wasn't immediately available.
Representatives of the Southern Nevada Health District didn't answer an invitation for comment late Friday afternoon. The Washoe County Health Department, the general public health agency for Nevada’s most populous county in Northern Nevada, has not reported any cases of the Brazilian variant, representative Scott Oxarart said.
The state’s first reported case was a 26-year-old man living in Clark County, consistent with a report provided by a representative of the Nevada Department of Human Services, who offered no further comment.

The development comes because the l. a. County Health Department announced on Wednesday its first cases of both the Brazilian variant and a separate strain first identified in South Africa referred to as B.1.351. In Nevada, the primary and only known case of the South African variant was identified by the state public health lab in mid-February. The case involved a person tested in Reno who had recently traveled there to the country.
Washoe County health authorities quickly notified the close contacts of the individual of their potential exposure, allowing them to self-quarantine and test for the disease, measures which will stop the spread of disease.
These new strains — which scientists ask as lineages — are created through mutations that occur as an epidemic spreads. About 50 types are circulating in Nevada, consistent with Pandora, with most posing no greater threat than the first strain. However, both P.1 and B.351 are labeled “variants of concern” by the CDC. this suggests there's early evidence that they'll spread more easily, leading to more severe disease, or reduce the effectiveness of vaccines.
There are quite 400 cases of the Brazilian variant reported within us, though more are likely present but undetected; only a little percentage of positive COVID-19 tests undergo genetic analysis during a laboratory.
Massachusetts leads the state with 102 reported P.1 cases, followed by Illinois with 93 cases, Florida with 87 cases, and California with 39, consistent with the CDC website the location, last updated on Thursday, doesn't yet show any cases in Nevada.
The most prevalent strain of the coronavirus currently circulating in both the U.S. and Nevada is one first identified within the UK referred to as B.1.1.7., which scientists believe is more contagious but isn’t immune to the vaccine. There are nearly 20,000 confirmed cases across the country altogether in 50 states.
Public health officials within the U.S. are urging more people to be vaccinated to stop another variant-fueled surge in infections like the one being seen in parts of Europe where vaccination rates are low.
